There is only one heroism in the world: to see the world as it is, and to love it.
Romain Rolland
Birthdays are an incredibly introspective time – especially when they come shortly after the new year; especially when they come during / after 2 years of all things “unprecedented.”
In honor of my upcoming 37th year in this lifetime at the end of this month, I leave you with a few words of wisdom from teachers, friends, and writers that have brought some soothing light to and have helped me make sense of the big transitions we’ve all been experiencing on individual and collective levels:
- “Anxiety about a situation does not fix the thing.” Yours truly
- “We have more than we think within that which we feel we lack.” Me again
- “Things work out.” Also me
- “If you’re in a fuckin’ storm, it’s OK to ask for help rowing the boat.” One of my bestest friends
- “There is no mobility in tension.” Iyengar teacher Nikki Costello
- “Health is a continuum; it’s not a fixed point.” Iyengar teacher Genny Kapuler
- “You need to learn how to take care of yourself. This is a lifelong project.” Genny Kapuler
- “Human incarnation is a mystery to experience, not a problem to solve.” Mindfulness Meditation teacher Jack Kornfield
- “The truth will set you free, but first it’ll piss you off.” Doctor Sharon from Ted Lasso
- “Takin’ on a challenge is a lot like riding a horse, isn’t it? If you’re comfortable while you’re doing it, you’re probably doing it wrong.” Ted Lasso
- “The opposite of courage is conformity.” Earl Nightengale
- “…I needed lust, the desire for possessions, vanity, and needed the most shameful despair, in order to learn how to give up all resistance, in order to learn how to love the world, in order to stop comparing it to some world I wished, I imagined, some kind of perfection I had made up, but to leave it as it is and to love it and to enjoy being part of it.” Hermann Hesse, Siddharta
