choosing sustainable choices

The most powerful thing you can do to change the world is to change your own beliefs about the nature of life, people, and reality to something more positive… and begin to act accordingly.

-Shakti Gawain

One of the reasons I believe strict rules like diets don’t work is because they wind up restricting us in a way that make us fear or resist what we “should” be doing, and so we wind up finding comfort in the rebellion of what we “shouldn’t” be doing.

When it comes to making sustainable choices, it is not much different than the internal battle I faced during my college years of salad versus fries – I knew the healthier choice, but I craved the familiarity of what I already knew in lieu of expending the energy it would take to try something relatively new.

It is one thing to own the choices we make without judgement [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][i.e. I want a salad with a side of fries today, sorry not sorry], but it can wind up being destructive in the long run to continually ignore what we know to be the more beneficial option simply because it seems too difficult, time consuming, or annoying [i.e. I want to learn how to make delicious plant-based meals, but I don’t know where to start].

Making more sustainable choices is imperative for each of our homes: mind [information HQ], body [houses our mind, keeps us alive], and planet [provides everything for everyone]. The health and wellbeing of these life building blocks depend on one another; the more we give them the love and attention they deserve, the more each of them will thrive.

Sustainability is more than a green lifestyle. One interpretation of the verb sustain is “to supply with food, drink, and other necessities of life.” It is not an enforcement of rigid rules, but a steady process of appreciating and caring for our bodies and the earth, whether it’s dietary choices or lifestyle practices.

As my passion for sustainability on all fronts runs deep, I was ecstatic to have my article 5 Myths About Green Living, Debunked featured on MindBodyGreen last week. Take a look for my thoughts and tips on how to make sustainability an accessible way of life instead of a confusing chore, including some of my favorite brands that help us to be more conscious consumers.

The more we are able to share our knowledge and tricks, the easier of a lifestyle transition this will be for all of us – whether you’re a country hippie, city hipster, or a full suburban household.

What are your favorite ways to “supply the necessities of life” for the mind, body, and planet?
