gold nuggets for the new year
Don’t be satisfied with stories, how things have gone with others. Unfold your own myth.
Rumi
Discovering Iyengar yoga over the past several years has not only enhanced my asana practice, but has also offered endless guidance and wisdom thanks to those whom I have had the pleasure of studying with, alongside my own endless self-inquiries.
In eagerly soaking up my teachers’ collective knowledge of the subject – whether I am in class or am watching them practice what they preach – I am continually surprised and delighted to witness how the practice of yoga has helped me recognize how far I’ve come and where I have the capacity to go.
As we near the end of the year, we naturally reflect. It is a time to celebrate our Selves and each other in the present moment, including where we’ve been and what we value, and what we envision for our future.
And so I offer you a few gold nuggets from Nikki‘s recent workshop in Amsterdam for you to incorporate into your end-of-year moments – as inspired by the infinite teachings of yoga:
- Relaxing the mind will result in the ability to shift the attention to the body and the present moment in lieu of gripping onto thoughts and expectations.
- The relationship with Truth is a choice; it is a path for the warrior and the willing, and the weapon is the sword of discernment.
- Awareness is the singular, all-seeing eye, which offers joy independent of circumstances.
- Wisdom will be revealed through practice. Remember this as you practice being present over the holidays [Ram Dass said, “If you think you’re enlightened, go spend a week with your family.”].
- Ghee is everything.
