lessons from les alpes

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature’s peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.

John Muir, The Mountains of California

One of my first yoga teachers once told us during our teacher training that we will never be expected to know everything. It is still a relief to me to be reminded that we have an opportunity to stay curious and never stop learning; that no one ever has to has all the answers all the time [not even the internet].

Because I know that sharing personal experiences and discoveries can be a means of better understanding our Selves and each other, I share with you [for what it’s worth] some of my own gold wisdom nuggets gained from a recent beautiful – albeit challenging – trek in the Swiss Alps:

  • good company makes difficult things less strenuous and more comforting [shout out to a very caring camping crew].
  • go at your own pace [and spend time with those who accept your unique speed — or lack thereof].
  • listen to and learn from nature [trees / birds / butterflies / beetles / flowers / bodies of water / etc].
  • the cold fresh body of water is worth the plunge.
  • the path might sometimes be rocky, but the body and mind are resilient [and when they’re too tired, someone or something can help pick you back up – even if that means literally picking up exhausted hikers and getting driven down the last few kilometers of the mountain…].
  • rest is productive and rejuvenating.
  • clean drinking water is a gift [and hydration is reinvigorating].
  • the view is worth the trek [keep going].
  • sunsets soothe.
  • sunrise is worth the early wakeup call.
  • smile at and greet strangers more often.
  • ask for help and offer support when needed [support abortion survivors here].
  • enjoy the journey [as much as you can / as often as possible].

What is this wild trek on our planet earth teaching you lately?
