not the same / not so different
One of the things that always surprises me about gathering together with a group of people on retreat is how, despite our differences (for some there are many, I know), there are quite a lot of common threads…
Maybe our formative years were spent in different countries but we shared similar activities; maybe one of us can’t have gluten but we both love to cook; maybe our native languages differ but we have a deep appreciation for the same snacks; maybe we don’t see eye to eye on food but yoga makes us both feel really good…
Our differences make us unique individuals, and our commonalities can connect us…
… the recognition that we share, for example, the fear of losing something or someone, a love or longing toward another person, or the feeling of joy and delight in whatever lights us up might remind us that we are interconnected.
This remembrance can… humanize us and help us recognize that we are all moving through different (yet sometimes similar) circumstances in different (yet sometimes similar) ways.
Maybe, after a while, we can learn from each other and learn how to work – or at least exist – together more peacefully and fluidly…
*Grazie mille to the fun, heart-felt, hilarious group who joined me on retreat in Tuscany this past week – stay tuned for more in 2024 and beyond…
