peace begins with us

“Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.”

Food for thought: How do we break bread with others when both bread and others are so often considered an enemy?

How do we extend compassion to all beings without compromising our boundaries?

How do we commit to attentively practicing truth and peace when it seems like so many are blindly practicing otherwise? And what’s the point at this point?

I don’t have perfect answers, but that certainly doesn’t mean I [we] can’t try — in fact i think it means that we must.

To quote the luminous Michelle Obama referencing the incident at the Capitol [which of course can be applied to life in general]: “The work of putting America back together, of truly repairing what is broken, isn’t the work of any individual politician or political party. It’s up to each of us to do our part. To reach out. To listen. And to hold tight to the truth and values that have always led this country forward. It will be an uncomfortable, sometimes painful process. But if we enter into it with an honest and unwavering love of our country, then maybe we can finally start to heal.”

This is not unlike any healing process – physical or mental, individual or collective. Dare I even quote the Bible – but it certainly rings true as we are faced with the cold hard truth of what needs to heal for the sake of the US and all beings: “Let there be peace on Earth, and let it begin with me.”

If all of this seems like an overwhelming task, especially for peace to begin within, remember to start small – it’s better than nothing. One of my beloved Iyengar teachers Genny Kapuler recently wrote to me that we must learn how to take care of ourselves, and that it’s a lifelong process.

How will you practice consciously acting from a place of peace versus subconsciously reacting from a place of fear?
