“things work out”
Human incarnation is a mystery to experience, not a problem to solve.
Jack Kornfield
Have you recently had a day [a year?] where things spill or break, credit cards malfunction, keys get stuck or lost, bank accounts ride a roller coaster of great highs and lows, plans get tossed?
Mindfulness practices have taught me that – by staying present with the moment in lieu of getting caught in past or future – we can shift our attention from what isn’t working to what is working itself out.
There may not be a scientific calculation of Why / How / When, but isn’t it true that – even amidst or after tragedy, heartbreak, conflict, and all Earthly struggles – things work out, eventually, in some way / shape / form?
Maybe it’s not how we expect – maybe it’s a little bit less fulfilling than we had hoped or even better than we could have imagined. Either way – things work out, the world stays in motion, seasons change, children grow, the river of life flows on.
I am not recommending we disregard the pain we experience as individuals and a collective – in fact, mindfulness practices teach us how to hold our whole #messydelicious human experience with loving awareness. I do think that, however, after a year of various pandemic obstacles, we could all use something to lift our spirits and encourage us to keep going.
So if and when you are feeling stuck in the mud – whether you are ruminating about the past or anxiously anticipating the future – I encourage you to take a minimum of 1 deep breath, pause, acknowledge the stresser, then say to yourself with conviction, “Things work out.”
To seal the deal, keep taking care of your Self in ways that feel aligned with your desires, and consider reflecting on a time when something worked out for you to remind yourself of your courage and the infinite possibilities that exist within and around you.
So – how might things work out for you this week?
