teacher tips for an important yoga pose & transition

In honor of the recent International Day of Yoga (and summer solstice – epic combo), I share this little Instagram reel introducing a few prep poses for the posture and transition of chaturanga dandasana (chaht-tour-ANG-ah don-DAHS-anna / four-limbed staff pose).

Whether or not you ever take my class (or set foot into any classroom for that matter, thanks to virtual everything…) I offer you a few of my top tips after 11+ years of teaching and watching many-a-variation of this pose:

(*Paid subscribers will soon benefit from mini-tutorials and private video links.)

common misconception for both teachers and practitioners is that we need to do a bunch of these in order to “get a workout” or build strength (bashfully raises hand as a former believer of said misconception).

That being said, all postures and transitions are valuable – especially when we execute them with attention and care.

There are various modifications we can apply so as not to completely avoid this pose and others, especially if we are working with injuries or specific conditions – which, of course, are all subject to shift over time.

Whether or not you love this pose and transition (*raises hand like Hermione Granger because I do, in fact, enjoy it*), it’s always important to better understand the mechanics in order to receive the benefits of a pose in lieu of overworking a specific area of the body – especially the shoulders and wrists in chaturanga.

If you find yourself in Paris on Saturday, July 1st, we’ll workshop this together in person at the sweet Studio Gérard Arnaud in the 11th arrondissement (EN / FR).

Questions? Comments? Other ideas? Need a modification?

Enjoy your body, happy summer, and take good care,

S
