releasing the busy beast

There have been constant reminders in my life as of late around the idea of busyness. It started when I stayed with my friend Stevie recently and was inspired by the time she allowed herself every morning to paint, then my friend Ksenia sent me this article with tips on how to Banish “Busy-Ness.”

When an aspect of our lives is on overload, the universe has its ways of communicating it to us, if we are willing to pay attention.

I am one of those people who responds to “how are you?” with “good, busy as usual!” I’m sure many of you can relate, especially when we live in a world full of distractions. How can we resist the constant stream of Buzzfeed articles, birthday dinners, weekend brunches and non-work related activities?

One thing about being busy for me has to do with feeling worthy of success. “If I work hard I will deserve this; I will only be worthy of this if I put in a lot of time and effort.” Really, though, we are all deserving all the time, regardless of how many hours we put in at work per week or how excessively we train.

The thing is that the busier we become, the more distracted we are from being with and getting to know ourselves. It’s easy to crowd out the stuff that bothers us about ourselves with exterior things [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][she says as she types this on her handheld device] which prevent us from recognizing how deserving and whole we already are.

In addition to becoming more mindful and compassionate toward our Selves and the parts of it we push away, we create more space and freedom for things we love in both our schedule and our heart. From that space births creativity, productivity, and truth [and acceptance of that truth].

From there we can practice letting go of the stuff that feels stuck – those tricky patterns that keep popping up to distract us and keep our minds too busy – in order to get to know and appreciate our Selves.

So this coming week, I challenge all of us to take time for ourselves and release the Busy Beast. When we practice this as individuals, we encourage each other to do the same and remind each other that we are all enough.

Smile, breathe, be.

What keeps you busy that you might be able to loosen your grip on this week? Start small and work from there [without working too hard, of course].
