fallen leaves, nourished soil, new growth
I used to love back-to-school season – it was a frontier of open-ended possibilities, a time to reconnect with friends, a chance to reorganize with fresh Lisa Frank folders…
While homework and adulting may have dimmed that enthusiasm over the years, yoga and meditation have inspired me to embrace Autumn in a new and meaningful way.
One thing that always touches me the most about fall – besides bidding adieu to summer – is how fallen leaves nourish the soil for new growth.
You’ve also maybe heard the Rumi quote: “Be like a tree and let the dead leaves drop.”
Lastly: trees are a major source of oxygen, and in Traditional Chinese Medicine, fall correlates with the metal element and the lungs.
With these concepts in mind and as fall begins, I invite us to pivot from “back to school” to “back to you” by:
- releasing what no longer serves us (in every season) – remembering that this can make space for new things to grow (and flourish!).
- breathing deeply as nature transitions – nurturing your lungs with practices like restorative yoga poses or breathwork.
- reflecting on the summer season and setting intentions for the months ahead.
- nourishing ourselves during this time of change in our own unique ways.
Create your own personalized fall rituals at home with practices like:
- taking luscious, deep breaths throughout the day.
- journaling about your summer experiences and autumn aspirations.
- reconnecting with friends over a cozy cup of tea or pumpkin treat.
- enjoying pre-winter walks or hikes – savoring the fresh, crisp air.
- exploring simple meditations and mindfulness tools to center yourself.
What makes you feel warm and fuzzy about fall / what helps you get back to you?
Take good care,
S
